Long Beach 9/29

from Nick Simpson:

We began our morning with another delicious breakfast.  We decided to take a break today from our usual work and tour a ancient city.  Before we got on our way we paused this morning to reflect on the reason and purpose of why we are here and why our hosts are here.

As we spent the day looking at history, I am reminded that we are currently making history and are a part of God's story for His glory!

"Long Beach" is full of beautiful and unique cities and people.  We visited 9 historical sites.  Some sites were once home to beautiful chapels; while others focused on pagan worship.  Our timeline took us between 2,000 years ago to just a few hundred.

One of the most impressive areas for me was the extensive dry dock system that "Long Beach" had created thousands of years ago.  It was the ancient equivalent to our modern shipyards and key to their domination of maritime trade.  They were an advanced people and devised amazing tools and systems to master the seas.

One of the most sobering sights was the remnants of a once huge and beautiful chapel that once held the great debates that shaped modern Christianity; but in the background an even larger and more dominating view of the mosque that sat atop the hill.  It is a sign that times have changed and there is a presence that goes beyond brick and mortar and reveals a battle not against flesh and blood, but "...against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Eph. 6:12)

After touring many historical areas, we stopped for lunch in a local town.  This town is marked with contrast white and blue buildings.  This is where we did a lot of shopping.  Even though it was difficult for me, I had to haggle down the price, but fortunately some of our team members and even our host can be amazing at getting the lowest price for something!

The day was full and fun, and after some down time and dinner we went back to the center to work a little more and finish up some projects.

Tomorrow is our last full day at "Long Beach".  It has been an amazing trip and one that I will never forget.  I am so blessed to meet, work, and pray with our hosts; and blessed to make strong friendships with our team.  These men are fun and amazing and I am honored to work along side them to help bring back the King!
